Mayor Miller Proclaims May 4 Jane Jacobs Day - Commemorative walk planned for May 5
TORONTO, May 3 /CNW/ - Mayor David Miller has proclaimed May 4, 2007 as
"Jane Jacobs Day" in Toronto.
Mayor Miller's proclamation notes that until her death in 2006, Jane
Jacobs inspired and taught the world how to understand and value our cities,
almost single-handedly transforming our ideas about urban life.
"As a writer, outspoken urban activist, a philosopher of everyday life
and an innovator, her work brought into focus the idea that cities are engines
of growth whose vitality stems from the variety of activities people engage
in," continued Mayor Miller. "She taught us about eyes on the street and that
walkable, dense, compact and diverse neighbourhoods were the hallmarks of a
healthy and prosperous city."
In honour of Jane Jacobs, Toronto's foremost urban thinker and activist,
the first annual 'Jane's Walk' will be held in neighbourhoods throughout the
city on May 5. Each walk will feature a tour guide who can speak knowledgeably
about the neighbourhood and will highlight the people, places, and public
spaces that make that particular community interesting and unique.
'Jane's Walk' is an exceptional opportunity for Torontonians to discover
the city; both places they think they know well and those they want to
explore.
Details on the walks can be found at www.janeswalk.net.
