Canada's forest practices under fire in DiCaprio film

    LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8 /CNW/ - The last of the world's forests are severely
threatened with logging in Canada alone contributing as many greenhouse gas
emissions as all of the cars on the road in California says Canadian forest
expert Tzeporah Berman in Leonardo DiCaprio's new film The 11th Hour, which
premiered today in Los Angeles and is set for wide release in the US and
Canada.
    "These forests are our lifeboat, but in regions like British Columbia's
temperate forest and Ontario's Boreal forest they are being handed over to
industry with no eye to the much greater concern of global warming," said
Berman, who is program director at ForestEthics. "Politicians, especially in
Canada where there is still an opportunity to do what's right for the forests,
can't duck from responsibility any longer."
    In the film, Berman explains how Canada's forests play an essential role
in the fight against global warming given they are major carbon storehouses
and when logged massive amounts of carbon are released.
    Berman, co-founder of ForestEthics and long-time forest activist, is
interviewed in the film along with 50 other leading scientists, thinkers and
leaders who discuss the state of the world and the state of humanity. She is
one of two Canadians who appear in the film.
    On August 9, ForestEthics along with Warner Independent is hosting a
private screening of the documentary in Los Angeles - other screenings are
planned for several Canadian cities, including Toronto and Vancouver.
    "The time for action is now. This generation is the one that must make
change as we have very little time left," said Berman.
